Documents required for police clearance

Last updated: August 2026 Requirements verified: July 11, 2026

Getting your paperwork together is the most important step for your police clearance certificate application in Bangladesh. I've seen too many applications get delayed just because of a blurry scan or a missing page.

If you follow this checklist exactly, you'll breeze right through it.

Mandatory documents

Basic documents required

Here's the thing. You absolutely need these basic documents for your police clearance certificate application.

Required documents
1

Passport
(Bio-data page)

Your valid Bangladeshi passport is the absolute backbone of your application. You can't start without it.

Why It Is Required:
  • They issue your police clearance certificate based directly on your passport.
  • Your name, date of birth, and passport number have to match perfectly. No exceptions.
  • Plus, since you're likely using this internationally, your passport is your main ID.
Important Requirements:
  • First, your passport needs to be valid. Don't upload an expired one.
  • Next, scan the bio-data page clearly. You must get it attested. Who can do this?
    • A 1st class gazetted government officer.
    • If you're applying from abroad, use the Bangladesh Embassy or High Commission.
    • Foreign nationals can use a Justice of Peace.
  • Finally, make sure every single word is readable. Don't crop the edges!
MRP Passport Address Clause:

Got an older Machine Readable Passport (MRP) without an address printed on it? You'll need to submit an extra attested copy of something else:

  • NID card, OR
  • Birth Registration Certificate, OR
  • Local Ward Councillor's certificate

* Must be attested by a 1st class gazetted officer.

Common mistakes (can lead to rejection):
  • Uploading expired passport.
  • Cropped image missing passport number.
  • Blurry mobile camera photo.

Note: Without a valid passport, most international police clearance applications cannot proceed.

2

National identity card
(NID) or birth certificate

They need your National ID to verify exactly who you are and where you live.

Why It Is Required:
  • It proves your citizenship.
  • It also matches your identity with the national database.
  • Finally, it confirms your permanent address.
Important Requirements:
  • Your name has to match your passport exactly.
  • The same goes for your date of birth.
  • What this means is consistency is everything.

Note: Don't have an NID? They might accept a valid Birth Registration Certificate depending on your situation. Just know that mismatched information between your passport and NID is a huge reason for rejection. I've seen it happen.

3

Photograph
(Passport-size)

You'll need a recent passport-size photo so they know it's you.

Requirements:
  • Use a clear background, preferably white.
  • Make sure there are no shadows on your face.
  • Don't use any heavy edits or filters.
  • And please, use a recent photo.

Blurry or low-res photos will absolutely drag out your processing time.

4

Online application
confirmation form

Once you finish your police clearance online application, you'll probably get a confirmation copy or summary.

You don't always have to upload this. That said, I highly recommend saving it. You'll need it later when you do a status check.

Purpose specific

Required documents for different purposes

What are you applying for? Your document list changes based on your purpose.

Visa application

Usually, you'll need:

  • Valid passport
  • NID
  • Photo
  • Online application submission

Just a heads up—some embassies want you to explicitly mention the destination country on the form.

Immigration

For immigration, you'll often need:

  • The police clearance certificate addressed to a specific country
  • Make sure you select the correct purpose when applying
  • And keep your passport valid

Double-check that you typed the destination country perfectly.

Employment abroad

In addition to standard documents:

  • Job offer letter (sometimes requested)
  • Correct purpose selection (employment)

Accuracy in purpose field is essential.

Higher study abroad

Standard documents usually apply, but:

  • Ensure passport validity covers study duration.
  • Select correct purpose in application form.
Representative application

Documents for representative applications

Authorizing another person to apply requires additional documents.

Authorization letter

  • Signed by applicant.
  • Clearly stating representative authority.

Representative’s NID copy

  • Required for identity verification.

Relationship proof (If required)

  • In case of family member representation.
Important note

Authorities may verify the authenticity of representative documents before processing.

Upload guidelines

File format and upload requirements

Portal submissions require specific file formats and quality.

Accepted file types

JPEG JPG PNG PDF

File size

Must remain within the Bangladesh police portal limit.

Quality guidelines

  • Clear scan, not blurred.
  • Full document visible.
  • No cropped edges.
  • Avoid glare or shadow.
  • Scanning through a proper scanner is recommended over mobile camera photos.
Rejection avoid

Common document mistakes

Take a minute to review your documents before you hit submit. It saves you so much time.

1

Name mismatch

Even a tiny spelling mistake between your passport and NID will cause huge verification headaches.

2

Expired passport

They won't issue a police clearance on an expired passport. It just won't work for international use.

3

Blurry or cropped upload

Upload a blurry photo, and your application will get paused or rejected.

4

Incorrect address jurisdiction

If you pick the wrong police station, your verification gets stuck. Double-check your area.

5

Uploading incorrect document

Don't upload random or incomplete files. That's a fast track to immediate rejection.

Attestation and certification

Attestation and notary

Here's some good news. You usually don't need notarization for your initial police clearance application.

But keep this in mind:

Some foreign embassies will ask for attested copies of the final police clearance certificate.

It entirely depends on your destination country's rules.

Always double-check with the embassy, employer, or immigration office. Do this after your certificate is issued.

Final verification

Pre-upload checklist

Run through this quick checklist before your final submission:

  • Your passport is valid and not expired.
  • Your name and date of birth match perfectly everywhere.
  • Your address details are 100% accurate.
  • All your files are clear and easy to read.
  • You selected the exact right jurisdiction.
  • Your application purpose makes sense.

Note: Reviewing documents reduces processing delays.

Information

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common queries regarding document requirements.

Is a passport mandatory for police clearance in Bangladesh?
Yes. For almost all international uses, you absolutely need a valid passport to get a police clearance certificate.
Can I apply without my National ID?
If you don't have your NID, they might accept your birth registration certificate depending on the situation. Your passport is always mandatory, though.
Can I just upload mobile photos of my documents?
I'd strongly recommend uploading proper scanned copies. Poor image quality is a quick way to delay your application.
What if I just moved and my address changed?
Make sure your current address falls under the right police station jurisdiction. You'll also need to provide supporting proof of address if they ask for it.
Do I have to submit my original documents in person?
Most of the time, everything is processed online. But local police might ask for physical verification if they need to double-check something.
